I've been teaching at River City High School since January 1997, when I took over five sections of Freshman World History (now taught at the Sophomore level) from a wonderful teacher who had to go on disability. Since then, I've taught US History, Government, Geography, Computer Literacy, Health, Drivers Education, and Law in both an Administration of Justice Academy (now defunct) and as a stand-alone class. Last year I became chair of the Social Science Department. This year, I try my hand at teaching two sections of Advanced Placement US History in addition to two sections of regular US History and, for the first time, a section of US History for English Learners.
I've been the teacher-coach for the Mock Trial team since 1999. In 2000, 2007, and 2008 River City Mock Trial went to state competition as Yolo County champion. Last year, we won our first competitive round against another county champion, defeating Yosemite High of Madera County. I've also been the advisor to our on-again, off-again Gay Straight Alliance.
My educational path has taken me from Sac City College to UC Berkeley, and I finally received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Sacramento State in 1995.
I played, coached, and refereed basketball for many years; alas my knees just don't allow me to play any more (Ms. Reece is still badgering me about refereeing again). I have rediscovered the joys of cycling, and my partner and I regularly ride for pleasure along the American River Bike Trail. Summers are for travel, Tahoe, or leisurely hours beside a pool, reading thick books with incomprehensible titles.
