11.1 Students analyze the significant events in the founding ofthe nation and its attempts to realize the philosophy of government describedin the Declaration of Independence

11.1.1

Describe the Enlightenment and the rise of democratic ideas as the context in which the nation was founded.

11.1.2

Analyze the ideological origins of the American Revolution, the divinely bestowed unalienable natural rights philosophy of the Founding Fathers, the debates on the drafting and ratification of the Constitution, and the addition of the Bill of Rights.

11.1.3

Understand the history of the Constitution after 1787 with emphasis on federal versus state authority and growing democratization.

11.1.4

Examine the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction and of the industrial revolution, including demographic shifts and the emergence in the late nineteenth century of the United States as a world power.

US Territorial Expansion Map

Map directions:

1) US States Outline Map: Label all 50 states with the name or their two-letter postal abbreviations (CA for California, NV for Nevada, etc.). Use arrows or lines for labels in areas that may get too crowded. You are responsible for knowing the 50 states, the 11 major territorial additions and the dates.

2) US Territorial Map: Color or shade your map to designate the territorial expansion of the United States (see pages A28-A29, or see a similar map at http://www.flatrock.org.nz/topics/history/assets/us_growth.jpg - note that this map does not include Alaska and Hawaii). Color the key for the territorial expansions and the years of their additions. Label the 10 major territorial expansion regions and the years.
